Highley Community Primary School

Let’s all make mistakes in our endeavour to learn!

Our Autumn Term in Year 6, with Wrekin and Hitchens Class, promises to be a packed, fun-filled term with adventures and new learning. We are all very excited about discovering new planets, moon landings and our own land adventure at Arthog!

Our overview ‘Jigsaw’ gives an idea of what we will be covering according to the National Curriculum, during this current academic year.

This term our Topic is - ‘To Infinity and Beyond!’ where we’ll be learning about the Solar System and the planets within it, space travel and more.

One of our roles this year is to prepare your child for secondary school. Children are using ‘Planners’ to record their reading and homework. All we ask is that you sign weekly in acknowledgement of them reading at home and completing their homework.

Homework will not given out on set days (similar to the ‘model’ they will experience in secondary school). Please see their Planner for details of homework given and when it is scheduled, to be returned. Please feel free to comment in the planner, if you wish to communicate with your child’s class teacher.

Usually homework will take the form of two pieces: a SPAG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) and maths activity. This is based on the work they have been doing in class. If your child experiences any difficulties with their homework, please encourage them to see their respective class teacher for help, prior to the date the homework is due.

We ask that children read 5 times a week at home and as a reward for this, we have introduced a hot chocolate treat at the end of each week. As you can imagine, this is very popular!

In addition, they will be expected to practise their spellings and spend some time each week on TTRS (‘Time Tables Rock Stars’) – particularly if they are not fluent in the recall of these all-important facts.

We suggest your child has their P.E. Kit in school for the whole week.  P.E. with Mr. Leather, is scheduled for a Tuesday and Wednesday. Children are expected to have uniform P.E. kit, with suitable footwear.

In the winter months, children may wear a tracksuit. Earrings need to be removed or covered with surgical tape (they will need to bring this into school with them).

If you have any concerns or queries, please do not hesitate to get in touch with your child’s class teacher.

Thank-you for your support.
